On a Whim: Cobb Salad Recipe

Born in the kitchen of Hollywood’s Brown Derby Restaurant, the Cobb salad is the quintessential American salad. Robert Cobb, after whom the dish was named, created this midnight snack, made up of various ingredients that were available in the refrigerator that fateful night. Cobb’s invention soon became a hit, from the most elite in Hollywood back then up to the present everyday people!


Makes 6-8 servings


¾ cup Olive oil
1 Tbsp Red wine vinegar
1 Tbsp Lemon juice
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp Sugar
½ tsp Garlic powder
Salt and pepper, to season

½ head Iceberg lettuce, shredded
1 head Romaine lettuce, torn into pieces
½ bunch Watercress (remove the stems)
1 small wedge Blue cheese
4 Hardboiled eggs, peeled and cut into cubes
1 Avocado, sliced into cubes
3 Tomatoes, chopped into cubes
1 Boneless breast chicken, cooked and sliced into cubes
4-5 Bacon rashers

  1. In a blender combine all the ingredients for the dressing. Purée the ingredients to make a smooth dressing. Season with salt and pepper. Set the dressing aside in the refrigerator.
  2. On a large platter or salad bowl, combine the iceberg, romaine and watercress. Arrange the blue cheese, hardboiled egg, avocado, tomatoes, chicken breast and bacon on top of the greens in neat rows. To serve, drizzle the dressing and toss.
