GROWING UP, you’ve probably been warned that street food is “dirty” and should not be consumed. It is unfortunate that street food has gotten this unsavory reputation, which can be a deterrent to enjoying Asia’s many street food capitals. Thankfully, Ulli’s Streets of Asia brings hawker favorites from Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore right to Cebu. Rest assured that the street food here is completely clean, and the only gastronomic danger at Ulli’s is overeating—an easy enough feat to accomplish, given how delicious the restaurant’s offerings are.

Situated near the Ayala Center cinemas, many of Ulli’s customers are moviegoers looking to grab a quick bite. They happily find it in the filling yet affordable Kua Paos, and the Popiah Assorted Vegetable Wrap, which is a healthier but equally delicious alternative to fast food wraps. Look around and you will notice diners eating their street food as ulam with rice. Try the Fish Balls in Chilli, which teases with a sweet flavor before turning to fire in your mouth, and the Szechuan Ribs, which are fall-off-the-bone tender and perfectly seasoned with five spice powder.

Owner and chef Raki Urbina discourages diners from ordering soda, and with Ulli’s wide selection of freshly made juices, who would want to? The Fuji Medley is notable for its skillful balance of tart and sweet flavors.

Be sure to make reservations, as the place fills up fast even during off-peak hours. Despite serving foreign food, there is a certain homey quality to Ulli’s. It may not serve haute cuisine, but here, fish balls never tasted so good. Perhaps it’s because the restaurant, like the food it serves, is laidback and unpretentious. Whatever the case, go ahead and enjoy a leisurely merienda over beef noodle soup and yakitori here. You will be glad you did.
