Strut-a Around: Sausage Strata Recipe

Did you know that the word sausage was derived from the Latin word “salsisium”, which means “something that has been salted”? Packing with their own kind of flavor, sausages can stand as a dish on their own. But for this recipe, we’re using ‘em as a filling in this luscious strata.

 

Sausage Strata
Makes 6-8 servings

 

2-3 pcs Italian sausage, sliced

1 Tbsp Cooking oil

1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese

1 cup Shredded mozzarella cheese

2 cups Day-old sliced bread, cubed and air dried

8 Eggs

½ cup Heavy cream

1 cup Milk

2 Tbsps Dijon mustard

  • Salt and pepper to taste

 

  1. Cook the sausage in some cooking oil over medium heat until golden brown. Set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine cheddar cheese and mozzarella cheese. Mix well. Set aside.
  3. Grease a baking dish and spread a layer of sausage slices at the bottom. Follow this with a layer of bread cubes and then a layer of the mixed cheese. Set aside.
  4. In another bowl, combine eggs, heavy cream, milk, and mustard. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Pour the egg mixture on the bread and sausage mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour to allow egg mixture to seep into the bread.
  6. Preheat oven at 350˚F. About 30 minutes before baking, take out the strata from the refrigerator and bake for about 45 minutes to an hour or until top is golden and bubbly. Test for doneness by inserting a knife in the center. If it comes out clean, eggs are properly cooked. Remove from the oven and serve.
