Have you heard of Basque? Belonging to the famous Spanish cuisine, Basque cuisine is a less familiar yet more different culinary inspiration. Get to know this cuisine even better with one of their signature dishes, the lamb stew.


Lamb Stew with Peaches

Makes 4 servings


2 Tbsps Olive oil

½ kilo Lamb shoulder, cubed

1 Tbsp Crushed garlic

1 Onion, chopped

1 tsp Ground cumin

1 tsp Ground turmeric

1 can (800g) Crushed tomatoes

2 cups Beef stock or water

1 cup Plain yogurt

½ tsp Salt

½ tsp Pepper

1 can Peaches, drained and cubed

  • Upland red rice for serving
  • Sautéed green veggies for serving


  1. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan and add the cubed lamb.
  2. Brown the lamb then remove to a plate. To the same oil, add garlic, onion, and sauté until soft. Mix in cumin and turmeric.
  3. When spices are fragrant, return the lamb and add the crushed tomatoes, beef stock, yogurt, salt and pepper. Simmer for 1 hour or until lamb is tender. Stir in the peaches. Serve with red rice and sautéed vegetables like broccoli and zucchini.
