Simple Pleasures: Sweet Ecstasy

sweet ecstasy - the double

WITH TONS OF BURGER JOINTS IN THE METRO, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO STAND OUT FROM THE REST? Would it depend on the amount of fillings you can sandwich in between two buns, or the creativity involved in making the burger? For Sweet Ecstasy’s co-owner Monica Tobias, it’s the simplicity of it.

Sweet Ecstasy serves only three kinds of burgers: Hamburger, Cheeseburger, and The Double (double the patty and cheese). “We’ve [only got one master burger recipe which] we make as special as we can, as opposed to bombarding people with many different burgers, with many different toppings that may be a hit or miss,” Monica adds. The components of the burgers may be minimal (beef patty, vegetables, and condiments), but they don’t skimp on the flavor.

The grilled beef patty, which is made purely from prime cuts of sirloin, short rib, and brisket, contains the right amount of char that gives way to the juicy meat. Sitting on a bed of fresh vegetables, the patty goes well with a spread of their special Ecstasy sauce, a blend of classic burger condiments such as ketchup and mayonnaise mixed with additional “secret” ingredients. All of these are found in between two fluffy brioche buns that are buttered and toasted on the griddle. This burger is a nod to co-owner Al Galang’s childhood burger in Southern California that “helped shape what he wanted and didn’t want for Sweet Ecstasy.”

As burgers are usually paired with fries, Sweet Ecstasy came up with a side dish that puts the burger on the fries instead. The Burger Fries is animal style fries generously topped with minced jalapeños and tomatoes, ground beef, melted cheese, and Ecstasy sauce. The fries are almost a meal on their own. Just don’t forget to ask for a fork to scoop up all the toppings and fries! If you’re feeling adventurous, try their Pickle Fries—battered and fried baby dill pickles served with garlic aioli. This may sound weird to some but if you think about it, most burgers do contain pickles, so it does make sense.

Their fried chicken wings also deserve a mention. Those who are looking for the classic sour and spicy buffalo wing taste should try their Sriracha Lime Wings. The sriracha is not overwhelming while the lime gives enough tang to even out the heat. Not used to heat? Opt for their Soy Honey Wings. On the sweeter side, these soy marinated wings remain crispy in a coating of honey sauce and sesame seeds.

To complete your burger experience, be sure to order their milkshakes. Relive your childhood with the crowd pleaser Nutella Oreo milkshake. They make milkshakes without ice or water—just pure vanilla ice cream! So expect your milkshake to be really thick with just the right amount of Nutella and Oreo bits. They also have an “adult” variant for those who want booze in their milkshakes. For starters, you may want to try the White Russian milkshake—a mix of vodka, Kahlúa coffee liqueur, and vanilla ice cream. Every sip of this milkshake gives a hint of coffee with the heat of the alcohol lingering in the mouth.

So what makes a good burger joint? To start with a basic but good burger recipe and not overcomplicate a classic would be Sweet Ecstasy’s answer. Their burgers are proof that sometimes, less is more.
