Latin American Fizzy Watermelon Agua Fresca and Horchata Drinks

Get your groove on with these Latin American-inspired drinks



Makes 4-6 servings

¼ cup Ground rice or rice flour

½ cup Blanched almonds

¼ tsp Ground cinnamon, plus more for dusting

1 ½ cups Hot water

2 cups Water

½ cup Sugar

½ tsp Vanilla extract

Ice cubes, for serving

  1. In a large bowl or pitcher, combine the ground rice, almonds, and ground cinnamon and submerge in hot water. Cover and let stand in the refrigerator for at least six hours or overnight.
  2. The next day, transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. Add a cup of water and blend again until well-combined.
  3. Strain the mixture using a cheesecloth or a very fine strainer set over a bowl. Transfer the strained mixture to a pitcher and add the remaining water and stir until combined.
  4. Add sugar and vanilla extract to the mixture and stir to combine. Chill until ready to serve. To serve, pour horchata over glasses filled with ice. Sprinkle  some ground cinnamon, if desired or serve with cinnamon sticks.

Fizzy Watermelon Agua Fresca

Makes 4-6 servings

1 kilo Ripe watermelon, seeded and diced

2 tsps Lemon juice

4 sprigs Fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish

1 cup Soda Water

¼ cup Sugar

  1. In a blender, combine the watermelon and lemon juice until smooth. Transfer the mixture into a pitcher.
  2. Infuse the mixture with fresh mint leaves and chill in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
  3. Before serving, add the soda water and stir to combine. Pour Agua Fresca into glasses with ice. Garnish with fresh mint leaves.
