You can use this homemade Tomato Sauce for anything!

A sure sign that summer is here is when tomatoes are abundant, plump, succulent, and sweet. And what’s one of the best ways to enjoy tomatoes? A flavorful sauce of course, that you can use in so many ways—from pasta sauces, addition to stews, and even as a bread topping. The prepping for this homemade tomato sauce may be at bit laborious, but don’t the best things in life require time and effort? For sure the reward will be sweet and delicious.



Makes 4 cups


3 kilos Fresh tomatoes

Water, for boiling

¼ cup Olive oil, plus more for drizzling

1 head Garlic, finely minced

1 Big onion, finely chopped

2 Bay leaves (laurel)

1 Tbsp Italian seasoning

1-2 Dried chili (optional), plus more for heat

Salt, to season

1 Tbsp Sugar or honey

1 cup Basil leaves, roughly chopped

  1. Place tomatoes in a pot of boiling water for 5-7 minutes, until the skin breaks. Peel skin off. Strain the seeds to get the tomato juice, discard the seeds. Roughly slice the tomatoes. Set aside.
  2. In a heavy-bottom pot, sauté garlic and onions in olive oil until onions are transparent.
  3. Add the bay leaves, dried chili, and Italian seasoning. Toss a bit and immediately add cooked tomatoes. Put cover on and simmer on low heat for 30-40 minutes, stirring every now and then.
  4. After 30 minutes, add salt to taste and sugar or honey. Remove the bay leaves at this point.
  5. Throw in the chopped basil and turn heat off. Drizzle with good olive oil and dried chili  for aroma and deeper flavor. Mix tomato sauce with your favorite pasta, tomato-based stews, and on top of toasted bread for bruschetta.


TIP: You may opt to purée half of the mix in a blender or with a hand blender for a more velvety, less chunky finish.
