Our Appetite intern attends one of fashion’s biggest nights—but for her, the real star is the food

I’ve never been one of those lucky people who would win VIP passes to concerts, but I imagine this is what it feels like to be able to go backstage and meet your heroes up close. Yeap, heroes, because I’m pretty sure Chef Audi Hayun Budiman and his team’s Kinilaw of Big Eye Tuna and Blue Marlin just gave me a new will to live.

When you come across posts of all these celebrity shindigs online, rarely do you ever get to see the food served at the event. I mean, before the Mega Millenial Ball, it never even occurred to me that they actually served gourmet cuisines at these gatherings. I guess, I kinda assumed that the guests were only served bread baskets albeit with a boatload of champagne.

Imagine my surprise when I got a text from my boss directing our team not to forget “to try the dishes so you’ll know how to describe them.” Wait what? “Them?” You mean there’s more than one meal? I thought this was gonna be a quick dinner, kind of just like a way to make sure our guests don’t faint halfway through the program.

Anyway, all those thoughts went out the window the moment I found out that it was gonna be a five-course meal. I never imagined that someone will ever have to ask me to make sure I try every dish of a FREE GOURMET MEAL. Ugh. What a task, right? And to clarify, I didn’t just try them, I shamelessly devoured everything that was served (with the help of the rest of Appetite Team of course).

Chef Budiman had a way of structuring his creations such that every bite tells a different story of the same gastronomically magnificent universe. I may have been able to rub elbows with Metro Manila’s most beautiful, but I swear I got the same amount of kilig in being privy to all the kitchen magic behind the scenes.

It was like prom meets Chef’s Table—but on steroids. Every guest was flawless and everything tasted sensational, I kinda wanted to cry, but I’m saving the waterworks for when my internship ends and I have to say goodbye to all the magic (and free food).
